形态描述：根状茎横生，粗而长，节间短，为褐色鳞片所被复，每一节上抽出1稈。稈多数，近于散生，高30-100厘米，极扁的三稜形，有时近于扁的，平滑，基部稍膨大呈鳞茎状，外被长鞘；鞘圆筒形，褐色，鞘口斜截形，顶端具短尖，边缘干膜质，最上面1-2个鞘顶端具叶片。叶短于稈，宽3-5毫米，平张，上端边缘具刺。叶状苞片3枚，极展开或有时向下反折；穗状花序1个，卵形，长圆状卵形或球形，长6-12毫米，宽6-8毫米，具极多数密生的小穗；小穗小，近披针形，压扁，长约3毫米，具1-2朵花；鳞片膜质，卵状披针形，顶端具短尖，麦稈黄色，具锈色短条纹，背面龙骨状突起上或多或少具刺，具5-7条脉；雄蕊3，花药线形，药隔突出；花柱长，柱头2，短于花柱。小坚果长圆形或倒卵状长圆形，平凸状，长约为鳞片的1/2，初期黄白色，后期黑色，具密的微突起细点，顶端具短尖。花果期5-9月。
